// March 17th, 2011 // 2 Comments » // Review

StyleKandi: A newborn Malaysia website from Antics Media Sdn Bhd and also the largest project to date was announced on 16 March 2011.

Before that, I came across StyleKandi via some website and it was then I thought to myself that I want to share more information regarding the website not simply because it looks sweet like candy, but also promising.

A week ago, I received an invitation to the exclusive press sneak preview of StyleKandi from Johnny Mayo, a staff of Antics Media Sdn Bhd. Getting all excited to know more, I attended the media event that was held at the Asian Heritage  Row.

The event started with performance from a local artist before moving on to the topic that everyone is craving for.

So what is StyleKandi?

First of all, StyleKandi’s aim to to become the top Malaysian Social Platform for users to ignite trends or share style & fashion tips with one another. The site will also profoundly promote related blog content from around the region to become an almanac for all things stylish and new.

As for the tagline ‘Collective Inspiration’, it serves as an all-encompassing summary of the project, encouraging people to inspire and be inspired alike.

The main event came in when Mark Wills present the beta platform of StyleKandi with elaboration on how it works.

StyleKandi is a platform that allows users to discover new trends and fashion. Users can upload their blog posts, share their pictures, post their Flickr photos or even synchronize from their preferred social networking sites to share with the community instantly.

Whether you’re a designer, blogger, or just someone proud of your new sneakers, users are able to watch as their style catches fire and inspires the community.

With StyleKandi, users are firmly in control. Bloggers can extend their influence and gain greater exposure  by linking their blog to StyleKandi, and everyone can share their ideas and inspiration with people around the world.

StyleKandi uses a sophisticated algorithm to determine how cool a post or look is. Users can show their love for a certain style, and the community will eventually determine its popularity.

Next up, an inspirational fashion show by StyleKandi in collaboration with Quiksilver and Roxy as the audiences watches the latest trend and style.

StyleKandi expected to launch its Beta Phase by the second quarter of 2011 along with mobile apps for both iPhone and Android users while is expected to reach all of Asia by year end.

Thanks to StyleKandi, I managed to get an early access to the platform. Here are some screenshots of StyleKandi Beta Phase.

The Last Five Years

// March 12th, 2011 // 3 Comments » // Review

The Last Five Years: A musical written by Jason Robert Brown. Premiered in Chicago year 2001 and was then produced as one of the hit in Broadway musical. Since then it has had numerous productions both in the United States and internationally.

And now, it is brought in to Kuala Lumpur by the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPac) and directed by Christopher Ling. Attended the musical show last thursday upon receiving an invitation from Denslee, founder of StageKL.

The story explores a five years relationship between Jamie Wellerstein (played by Jon Chew) a rising novelist, and Cathy Hyatt (played by Tabitha Kong) a struggling actress.

Throughout the musical, it uses a form of storytelling in which Cathy’s story is told in reverse chronological order (beginning the show at the end of the marriage), and Jamie’s is told in chronological order (starting just after the couple have first met).

The characters do not directly interact except for a wedding song in the middle as their timelines intersect.

The Last Five Years was inspired by Jason Robert Brown’s failed marriage to Theresa O’Neill.

Overall, the Last Five Years is a remarkable music show that has the essence of bitter sweet symphony. Leaving the audience a touch of love and hate.

The Last Five Years is definitely one of the best musical that I’ve ever watched and also my favorite.

LIMKOKWING DEBUTS FIRST SOLO ARTIST

CYBERJAYA, 3 March, 2011— Limkokwing University of Creative Technology today debuted the first artiste it has signed on at Hard Rock Cafe in Kuala Lumpur.

Ernie Shaheerah: My Only One is the debut single by an alumnus of the University, Nurrul Ernie Shaheerah Zulkifli. The single includes also two bonus tracks in Bahasa Malaysia and Mandarin. Ernie Shaheerah, who is also the University’s Choir Director, will be exclusively managed by the Sound and Music Design Academy (SMDA) of the University. SMDA will produce her albums, and act as her manager and promoter.

A Fairytale Launch

More than 200 guests and media were present at the grand launch which also saw the debut of the music video for the title track, My Only One. The video – projected on a giant screen – precluded Ernie Shaheerah’s grand entrance, where she sang the same song ‘live’.

The artiste then touched the audience when she smoothly transitioned into the Malay song, Semalam Kan Hilang, and finally into a surprising rendition of her Mandarin song Fairytale.

After the private concert, Ernie Shaheerah was congratulated and greeted by the guests and many asked her to autograph their copy of Ernie Shaheerah: My Only One.

An Artist’s Soul

This rising star is 25-years-old and comes from Klang where she discovered her passion for music. After secondary school Ernie Shaheerah understood that music was her vocation. She first did her foundation studies in music at the Akademi Seni Kebangsaan (Aswara) Padang Merbok in Kuala Lumpur. In 2005 she joined LUCT to study at its Sound & Music Design Academy and graduated in 2009 with a Diploma in Sound and Music. Since she joined the university, Ernie Shaheerah had the opportunity to perform live for more than 150 events. She has sung before prime ministers, presidents, royalty and celebrities in Malaysia, the UK, Botswana and Lesotho. Ernie Shaheerah also performed on a TV show on Chinese channel Hunan. The young woman is determined in what she wants in life and she did not hesitate to accept Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing’s offer to work with him on an album. Ernie Shaheerah is employed by LUCT as choir conductor and talent hunter, but more importantly, she is a star in the making.

If her name or voice seems familiar to the Malaysian public, this is no surprise as she is the female lead voice on two songs – Satu Malaysia and Malaysia Innovative – that are frequently played on national radio and television stations. Both songs were produced by Limkokwing Sound & Music Design Academy, of which Ernie Shaheerah is an alumnus and currently, the Choir Director.

It’s all about love

Ernie Shaheerah’s songs are her interpretations of ‘love’, but with a twist. Each song in the single is in a different language – Bahasa Malaysia, English and Mandarin. My Only One is a pop-rock song composed by the Academy’s Engineer, Azri Hashim, and arranged by alumnus, Farique Nadzir. The lyrics, written by LUCT’s alumnus, Sheela Ann Nair, talks about this universal love for someone dear to one’s heart. The Mandarin song, Fairytale, is all about perfect love in a perfect life that every teenager dreams about. This ballad was composed and written by Debbi Teong, SMDA’s composer. Semalam Kan Hilang tells the true story of a young girl that was brutally killed by a group of men and questions how people could resort to such things. This pop-ballad in Malay was created by Farique Nadzir and his wife, Nurul Saadah.

The Launching Pad

Limkokwing University is well-known for giving students and graduates the opportunity to shine in their chosen industry. The University is now going the extra mile by offering those with potential to become recording artistes, a full-fledged talent management launching pad. Like Ernie Shaheerah, Malaysia’s most globalised university is looking for new talents that need to be produced. The Sound & Music Design Academy at the Cyberjaya campus has all the facilities to record and produce music. LUCT’s renowned branding and communication experience is set to take Malaysia’s music industry by storm, developing brand new artistes that connect with all Malaysians.
